increasing the resilience of caregivers and family member of autistic individuals

It can be a challenge for caregivers or family members to support autistic people (with an intellectual disability) and additional mental health problems. Abroad, there is already evidence for using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)-based approaches to increase resilience and reduce stress in caregivers and family members. De Vijver, an organization that provides support to individuals with autism and/or intellectual disabilities, organizes ACT workshops for caregivers and family members within their facility.

What? Workshop based on principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and mindfulness
For whom? Caregivers and family members of autistic people with and without intellectual disabilities with additional mental health problems
Why? To increase resilience
What is the research about?
Which international existing protocols for this workshop are suitable for use in Belgium and are any adjustments needed?
Together with an expert panel consisting of experienced ACT therapists, we compare existing protocols. Based on this, a protocol is chosen, translated, and adjusted for use in Belgium where necessary.
How satisfied are the participants with the ACT workshop?
We use an online survey to ask how satisfied caregivers and family members are with the content of the ACT workshop.
What effect does the ACT workshop have on the participants?
Through an online survey among caregivers and family members who participated in the workshop, we want to find out what effect the workshop has on: (1) psychological flexibility or resilience, (2) experienced stress, and (3) mental health.
